Developing diagnostics to address the global problem of AMR

Mumbai, 29 th  July 2016:  The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and Nesta, a United Kingdom based Charity managing the Longitude Prize, organized an outreach event on Thursday in New Delhi to promote the Discovery Awards, which aim to create a pipeline of innovations in the Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) diagnostics. BIRAC has committed a funding of GBP 100,000 for the Discovery Awards, to support Indian participants. The Discovery Awards are seed grants to support teams and individuals to further develop their ideas for the Longitude Prize. The British government introduced the Longitude Award in 1714 to support scientists to solve the most pertinent challenges affecting the globe. Viral hepatitis kills approximately 350 000 people every year in the Region. It is responsible for more deaths than HIV and malaria together, and is second only to tuberculosis as a major cause of death among communicable diseases. Globally, and in the Region the number of deaths due to viral hepatitis is increasing. There is need for immediate and urgent action to arrest the spread of hepatitis. In the South-East Asia Region, viral hepatitis is driving rates of liver cancer and cirrhosis, and is causing premature death and disease with over 100 million people chronically infected with hepatitis B and hepatitis C. The report offers insights on earning, spending and investing patterns of India’s UHNIs. The theme of the report - ‘Optimism Uninterrupted’, aptly captures the positive mood of the economy, increase in consumption and uninterrupted spending by UHNIs. TOP 2016 offers interesting insights into the world of UHNIs. UHNHs in India have increased by 7% to approximately 146,600 in FY16, a compounded annual growth rate of 16% over the previous five years. They represent an accumulated net worth of Rs. 135 trillion, a growth of 5% over last year and 18% compounded growth over the last five years. Three Indian women runners Neelam Rajput, Supriya Patil and Priyanka from an economically less privileged backgrounds participated in their first ever international half marathon in Pattaya today supported by Milind Soman and Tourism of Thailand. They have been winners of the 21km category of Pinkathon, India's biggest run for women. Neelam Rajput stood overall second in the race and first in her age group with 1:32 timing for HM and Supriya Patil has finished third in her age group with 1:45 for 21km in very hot weather conditions. Milind Soman also ran the 21 kms half marathon along with the girls to cheer and motivate them. They ran to promote Pinkathon which focuses on health & fitness for women and spread breast cancer awareness.  This is their first ever international travel.
